About the Apple iPhone

How to set up IMAP for Gmail on your iPhone

Just as the iPhone is the “cool cellphone” for “cool people,” more and more, Gmail is becoming the e-mail of choice for “cool people.” It's also becoming the world's most popular email provider. Why? Because of Gmail's easy, intuitive interface; and because they offer an almost unlimited amount of storage space. Much like Google's search engine, Gmail is not gaudy, but very plain and simple, without ads placed everywhere on the page. Also like the search engine, information is easy to find. For all of these reasons, Gmail makes the perfect email companion for your iPhone.

But how do you integrate your Gmail account with the iPhone so that checking email is quick and simple? Fortunately, Google themselves have just done some things to help with this process.

What they've done is to allow users to add a protocol to the iPhone solely for Gmail accounts. This IMAP tool will allow Google account holders to check their email on any offline email readers—such as the iPhone. This protocol is a breeze to install and run on the iPhone. Therefore, it lets you effortlessly merge your iPhone simplicity with Gmails own ease of use.

The fist thing you need to do is go to your Gmail account and go to Settings. Once there, click on Forwarding and POP / IMAP. Now click “enable IMAP.” Next tap “Settings” on your iPhone. Now tap Mail, and finally, click “Add Account.” Once you've done all this, click OTHER (Do NOT click “Gmail options” yet.). Now you should be able to start entering information. Start by entering your name, then the host name (imap.gmail.com). After this, enter your full Gmail account address, which includes the @gmail.com refernce at the end of your username.

Now you'll move to the Outgoing Mail Server, or SMTP. Enter smtp.gmail.com under “Host Name,” then save all of your changes. You should now be able to view all of your Gmail messages, old and new.

In our fast-paced world, being able to check your email whenever you want, and wherever you are, is key. The iPhone, together with Gmail, makes this a quick, easy and painless process.
